Become Certified

To obtain the Certified Water Technologist (CWT) designation, please follow the process below.

  1. You must have a minimum of five years acceptable field experience in the water treatment industry.

  2. You must take and pass the CWT exam. A computer-based exam can be taken at one of the Pearson Vue facilities. For questions or concerns, contact Angela Pike.

AWT has received the following update from Pearson Vue regarding CWT exam candidate scheduling:

Our number one priority continues to be centered around protecting the health and safety of our testing candidates and employees. We monitor government guidance and restriction information routinely and prepare for necessary adjustments weekly.

Unfortunately, as we’re all aware, the virus and its impact has not yet been contained.  Government guidance and various restrictions including social distancing measures continue to be extended as our communities continue to battle to “flatten the curve”.

Based on the latest health and safety information and continued government guidance, we are continuing to take the following actions related to our Global PPC operations effective June 1:

    • We will open test centers in areas where there are no restrictions prohibiting operation.  We monitor restrictions and make adjustments as necessary.
      • We must be able to outfit our test centers with appropriate social distancing measures* and health and safety necessities, such as hand sanitizer, disinfectant, etc. for operation.
        • *We must reset our test center seat availability in order to accommodate the required social distancing measures for candidate appointments across our global PPC network through June.
    • For US and Canada, we will extend the temporary suspension of exam deliveries where restrictions remain through June 30.
      • This decision continues to be grounded in adhering to each state’s regulations and guidance, and keeping our candidates, employees, and communities healthy and safe amidst this pandemic.
      • Candidates scheduled through June 30 will begin to receive a cancellation/reschedule notices on May 18.
      • New candidate appointment availability begins on July 1 and beyond.
    • We will continue delivering exams deemed as an Essential Service on a limited basis through June 30.
    • As states lift restrictions through June, we will open your program’s availability.

All of our efforts align directly to our goal of reopening our PPCs and resuming operations as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the current conditions do not allow for us to further broaden our operations or additional program deliveries quite yet.

We review the possibility of resuming PPC operations every day, and are currently targeting July 1, but will adjust availability prior if it becomes possible.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we work through this difficult time together.

  3. Upon passing the CWT exam, you must complete the CWT application. You have one year from the date you passed the CWT Exam to complete the CWT application process:
    • Complete and submit the application form and references.
    • A CWT Committee member will review your application and contact your references.
    • You will receive the results of your application within four weeks.
  4. To maintain your CWT, you must recertify every five years.
