Title: An Update on Ozone as a Biocide for Cooling Water
Learner Objectives:
Update the water treater community on the current state of ozone as a cooling water biocide.
Content/Topic Outline:
Presenter:
Anthony Sacco and Jim Lauria
Presentation Description:
Ozone is well established as a broad spectrum biocide in a variety of applications, most notably drinking water where over a billion gallons of water per day are treated. It has also found extensive use in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries due to its ability to control pathogens. While ozone has been used to treat cooling water, it has been primarily in special cases such as applications where blow down to sensitive water bodies is involved or where storage on chemicals on-site is restricted.
This presentation will discuss ozone’s biocidal action, briefly discuss the history of ozone in cooling water treatment, modern ozone water treatment technology, and cover several case studies involving the use of ozone in cooling water. The paper will also discuss emerging cooling water applications where the use of ozone might be useful.
